Miyake Design Studio Teams Up With Asics on Footwear Development Project, Unveils ‘Hyper Taping’ Sneaker

Miyake Design Studio and Asics are joining forces on a new footwear development project.

Dubbed “Issey Miyake Foot,” the project is described by the Japanese fashion brand as creating “unexplored footwear by reexamining the human foot.”

The first product from Issey Miyake Foot, which was first seen during the IM Men spring 2026 show at Paris men’s fashion week, will be released next month.

Called “Hyper Taping,” the new silhouette was created by reconstructing the Asics Stripes, which was originally designed not only as a visual element but also to enhance structural strength and improve fit.

Representatives from the Miyake Design Studio, which has been a longtime collaborator with Asics, told FN in an interview that the Asics Stripe has been passed down since its first adoption in 1966 with the “Limber Leather” model.

“Its origins lie in a structure based on functionality, designed to protect the Achilles tendon and enhance upper strength,” the reps said. “We strongly resonated with Asics’ sincere approach to craftsmanship, focused on the function of the human foot and footwear.”

To create the model, the Miyake Design Studio incorporated thick elastic bands arranged around the shoe to mimic athletic taping to stabilize the body and support movement. The design also features a wrestling outsole, which is inspired by the distinctive structure of a gecko’s foot, that extends up to the lower part of the upper to further the shoe’s strong grip performance.

Plus, a new last was also developed for the shoe by widening the originally tight wrestling outsole shape and is paired with a responsive SpEVA midsole and an Ortholite insole.

What’s more, the upper combines multiple types of leather and mesh, and comes in three colorways: a signature fluorescent green, all-black, and all-gray.

But at the core of the collection is Issey Miyake’s mission to “seriously pursue shoemaking” by combining the brand’s technology and creativity with Asics, “starting from insights gained through sports engineering.”

The joint footwear development project “Issey Miyake Foot,” created by Miyake Design Studio and Asics, will launch from the spring 2026 season at Issey Miyake, Asics, and select retailers. The project’s first “Hyper Taping” shoe will be released on Jan. 5.
