Shoes for a Cure, Chelsea market, shoe sample sale for breast cancer research

After a major Miami event last week, Shoes for a Cure is making a splash in New York with a five-day charity shoe sale to raise money for breast cancer research at Weill Cornell Medicine.

From today through Saturday, consumers can shop for the cause from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sunday doors are open until 5 p.m.

The sale includes 10,000 pairs of shoes donated from top brands, including Veronica Beard, Stuart Weitzman, Sam Edelman, Marc Fisher, Larroude, Birkenstock, Alexandre Birman, Asics, Hunter, Rag & Bone, Hugo Boss, Allen Edmond, Favorite Daughter and more.

Prior to the event’s official opening this morning, two important events set the stage for a big week.

On Monday, Shoes for a Cure held a VIP “Power Hour” and ribbon-cutting ceremony at Chelsea Market.

The evening brought together leaders across fashion, footwear and entertainment, who appeared alongside Shoes for a Cure board members, doctors and breast cancer survivors. Notable attendees included Debra Messing, Constance Zimmer, Ricki Lake, Fern Mallis, Tracy Margolies and Dr. Lisa Newman, who has led extraordinary research efforts at Weill Cornell.

Anne Fisher, the wife of the late Jerome Fisher — the Nine West cofounder who started the charity event’s predecessor, Shoes on Sale, with his late daughter, Jodi Fisher — was also in attendance.

Sandi Mines, president of the Fashion Footwear Charitable Foundation, talked about how the footwear and fashion communities have rallied around the cause, with more than 450 volunteers set to staff the sale this week.

Dr. Newman told the crowd how crucial the funds raised through Shoes for the Cure are to her work, which focuses heavily on research around racial and ethnic disparities in breast cancer research and treatment. Black women, in particular, face a higher mortality rate and are more likely to battle aggressive types of the disease, like triple-negative breast cancer.

Shoes for a Cure power players were back at it on Tuesday at the Manolo Blahnik boutique, where Emily Rockefeller hosted a special shopping event (with 15 percent of proceeds going to the cause) and VIP dinner with the luxury label, which drew Leandra Medine, Lilah Ramzi, Gigi Burris, Jessica Wang, Stacy Bendet and Zimmer, among others.
