Local Rec Centers Serve as the Inspiration for Foot Locker and Nike’s New Store Concept in LA’s Crenshaw Neighborhood

Foot Locker and Nike are hoping to generate some local buzz with their new collaborative retail concept shop in Los Angeles.

Called “The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker,” the retailer noted that the store was created in partnership with local neighborhood leaders, and was developed with Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse.

Located at 3222 W Slauson Ave. in South Los Angeles, the new store takes inspiration from recreation centers, which have long served as a gathering place for sports, culture and local connections.

This reference can be seen in the store’s design, which features an equipment room, open gym, hyper-local collections, creative workspaces, and a dedicated resource center that will host year-round programming supporting resident.

According to Foot Locker, the store will sell merchandise available only at The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker, including a Crenshaw High School x Nike Team Shop collection and a capsule collection by L.A.-based designer Gavin Mathieu of Supervsn Studios. The store will also play host to ongoing pop-ups highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs for future collaborations.

Educational workshops including music academies, run clubs, barber shop cuts, and other celebrations will be held throughout the year and the store will also host neighborhood hiring initiatives to create opportunities for residents.

To bring this vision to life, Foot Locker and Nike, Inc. teamed up with local Crenshaw talent to create an authentic expression of the neighborhood’s identity.  Contributors include Mathieu, the late Nipsey Hussle’s The Marathon Brand, Crenshaw High School, and local vendors, artists and community leaders.

Samiel Asghedom, co-founder of The Marathon Brand, said in a statement that the store’s new location is “extremely important.”

“We were raised in this shopping center,” Asghedom noted. “The restaurants, the record stores, the supermarkets, everything in the shopping center has played a role in shaping our childhood. Hussle sold mixtapes out of this parking lot and we know he would be proud to be a part of bringing youth initiatives to this unique retail experience.”

Brett O’Brien, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Foot Locker, added that the new store reflects the company’s “commitment to investing in the communities that have shaped our brand and continue to move sneaker culture forward.”

“Together with Nike, Inc. and respected voices across Crenshaw, we’re proud to create a destination that honors the neighborhood’s rich legacy while inspiring the next generation through sport, culture, and community,” O’Brien said.

To celebrate the grand opening, Foot Locker will host a Community Swap Meet and 3v3 tournament on Saturday, August 22 featuring local vendors, community partners, and special guests.

Foot Locker noted that its newest store “represents the first expression” of this retail concept. Similar neighborhood-driven experiences between the retailer and Nike are being explored, the company added.

The news comes just weeks after Foot Locker unveiled a new campaign dubbed “It Always Will Be Foot Locker.” Unveiled earlier this month, the two-minute video narrated by Method Man hopes to mark a new chapter for the retailer while also honoring the defining sneaker moments over the last 50 years.
