EXCLUSIVE: Former Pro Beach Volleyball Player Gabby Reece Debuts Namesake Sneaker With Vionic

Nearly one year after becoming Vionic’s first well-being ambassador, former pro beach volleyball player Gabby Reece’s first namesake sneaker for the science-focused footwear brand is here.

Dubbed “The Gabby,” the new silhouette is built for walking and is engineered to support proper foot roll and a natural gait.

According to the Caleres-owned footwear label, properties in the shoe include friction laces designed to not loosen during movement, a seamless embossed padded tongue to add structure, a molded heel counter to hug the foot, an engineered knit upper that adapts to one’s foot shape, a 3D-printed toe overlay and a dual-density midsole foam. Other features include a TPU stability plate and a rubber outsole.

In an interview with WWD sister publication FN, Reece noted that “form and function have always been inseparable” in her life, something she carried over into this project.

“Over the course of 30 years, I’ve collaborated on footwear twice — working with Vionic gave me the opportunity to do it for a second time, this time alongside their designers and biomechanics experts to create something truly intentional,” Reece explained. “Together, we engineered Vionic’s most advanced walking shoe, a sneaker that prioritizes how the body moves while still looking great.”

Reece added that The Gabby “proves you don’t have to sacrifice beauty for performance or performance for style.” Every design choice was about making a shoe that “works hard for your body and still makes you feel confident when you wear it,” the athlete said.

“For me, this sneaker is about honoring movement as a daily practice,” Reece continued. “I wanted to create something that supports how people actually live — walking, standing, showing up — while reinforcing the idea that everyone is an athlete if they commit to moving with intention. If it helps you stay in motion longer or gets you excited to move, then it’s doing its job.”

This isn’t the first time Reece has designed a sneaker. In 1994, she became the first female athlete to design a shoe for Nike.

Reece told FN in a separate interview in March that while working with Nike in the ’90s on gym/cross-training shoes, she learned “how damaging it can be” to wear shoes over long periods of time that aren’t designed well.

“I think I’m looking at [designing The Gabby as] not only at a different age with different goals, but also trying to support people where we’re saying, ‘Hey, we want you to move, but we also want you to take care of your feet,’” she said at the time.

Vionic’s new The Gabby sneaker, which retails for $200, is now available in the Salted Dune colorway on VionicShoes.com. The full collection of colorways — which also include Adobe and Aloe, Raven Coast and Ocean Veil — will be released later this month.
